Foods Recalled To Avoid Health Risk

Posted by: drobinson In: Food Safety| Recalls

In cooperation with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), we are providing this weekly heads-up alert about contaminated or otherwise unsafe foods being recalled, to reduce the health risk to consumers by making up for the lags between recall orders and their targeted products being actually pulled off grocery store shelves.

FOOD RECALL ALERT — 8/22-8/29/09

Updated list of recalled foods from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA)— fda@service.govdelivery.com. (Note: FDA does not endorse these products or companies.)

(1) On Aug. 29, 2009, Melon Acres announced the recall of cantaloupes distributed through Farm-Wey Produce of Lakeland, FL, due to potential health hazards. The cantaloupes were shipped August 13th and 14th and were identified as 41 MG 10, Bin Numbers 4753-4980.

(2) Chef Pierre®, Gourmet Lemon Meringue Pie, day code 9159 was voluntarily recalled on Aug. 29, 2009.

Chef Pierre® is voluntarily recalling a partial production run of the following foodservice product as a precautionary measure, since the product may contain milk, an undeclared allergen that may pose a potential serious and life-threatening health risk to milk-allergic individuals. This recall affects 4,380 cases of Chef Pierre Gourmet Lemon Meringue Pie labeled product that actually contained chocolate meringue pie.

(3) Avoid Island Snacks Natures Mix, a product of Snack King Foods, Inc., located at 675 Pullman Avenue, Rochester, N.Y.  On Aug. 29, 2009, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker alerted consumers that the company is recalling its Island Snacks Natures Mix due to the presence of undeclared sulfites. People who have severe sensitivity to sulfites may run the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume this product.

(4) Recall announcement was made by Quesos Mi Pueblito, LLC of Passaic, NJ on Aug. 27, 2009 for its cheese products with “Sell by Date” from Feb. 2, 2009 until further notice. The company cites possible health risks as its reason for the recall.

(Note from this FRC blog site’s Editor: We have not been able to find out if, or how many people have been sickened by the product due to it being on sale since Feb. 2. Therefore, even though the company indicates the recall is for products sold since then until only Aug. 27, we urge consumers to make sure the reason(s) for the recall have been remedied by Quesos Mi Pueblito, before buying its products. We also want to draw your attention to the low nutritional value and high sodium and saturated fats (i.e. cholesterol) content of these over-processed and less than healthy cheeses.)

(5) The Kroger Co. is recalling Kroger brand Super Kids Enriched White Sandwich Bread sold in 13 states because it may contain milk not listed on the label. Customers should return the product to stores for a refund or replacement. The company announced this recall on Aug. 22, 2009.

(Note from FRC Editor: We trust that nutrition-savvy consumers prefer to feed their children organic whole-grain breads, rather than ones made with white, over-processed, low-fiber and probably GMO flour.)
